Rapid72010-11-01 content and product updates
   Pre-release announcement

This Rapid7® NeXpose® release features new and updated checks; authentication on WMI scan targets; and bug fixes.

These release notes document what's new in the  next NeXpose release. Your NeXpose installation will automatically download and install these updates.

New checks for QuickTime | content

  • New vulnerability checks expand security coverage for the popular Apple QuickTime multimedia platform. These checks require the most recent product update.

Remote check for two similar vulnerabilities
on Windows XP and Windows 2003 | content

  • A safe, remote check for the MS06-040 vulnerability now also flags the MS08-067 vulnerability on Windows XP and Windows 2003 targets. These two critical vulnerabilities are similar in terms of security risks. Both allow attackers to execute remote code on Windows systems. If a scanned asset is found to be vulnerable to MSO6-040, it is likely to be vulnerable to the more recent and highly exploitable MSO8-067. This check allows you to flag both vulnerabilities without credentials.

Bi-monthly vulnerability check update | content

  • New vulnerability and patch checks bring NeXpose coverage up to date for the following operating systems and applications:
    • Adobe Flash
    • Adobe Reader
    • Apache
    • Apple QuickTime
    • CentOS
    • Cisco devices
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • OpenSSL
    • PHP
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    • Solaris
    • VMware
These  checks help prevent security breaches that could allow hostile parties to take control of affected systems, gain access to confidential data, disrupt business operations, or cause other problems. All new checks for Apple QuickTime, Adobe Acrobat Standard, and Adobe Acrobat Professional require the most recent product update.

NTLMv2 authentication on WMI targets | product

  • NeXpose now uses NTLMv2 protocols to become authenticated on scan targets that share management information according to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) standards. This expands your range of accessible scan targets in Windows environments that enforce WMI communication policies.

Bug fixes | product

  • Bug fixes improve scan accuracy on several target programs, giving you better information for assessing security and prioritizing remediation projects:
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional versions are now fingerprinted correctly.
    • Apple QuickTime version 7.5 is now fingerprinted correctly.
    • False positives have been eliminated in Microsoft patch checks.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • How will I know NeXpose has updated with this specific release?
All updates are listed in NeXpose under the News tab.
  • Why doesn’t the most recent date on the News page match the dates of the current updates on the Administration page?
You may occasionally notice that the most recent date on the News page does not match the dates of the current updates listed on the general Administration page for the NeXpose Security Console. The dates on the News page are official release dates. The dates on the console Administration page indicate when updates were actually applied to your NeXpose installation.
  • What are content updates, and what are product updates?
Content updates include new checks for vulnerabilities, patch verification, and compliance with security policies. Product updates include performance improvements, bug fixes, and new features in NeXpose.
  • What are content updates, and what are product updates?
Content updates include new checks for vulnerabilities, patch verification, and compliance with security policies. Product updates include performance improvements, bug fixes, and new features in NeXpose.
  • Why are installers not updated with every release?
To help you stay on top of an ever-growing number of security threats, Rapid7 makes the delivery of new security content timely and convenient.  After installation and first-time start-up, NeXpose continues to update itself dynamically. This makes it unnecessary for Rapid7 to update installers  as frequently as we release new security content. So, you don't have to download installers every time new content is available.
  • Does this dynamic self-updating cause NeXpose to restart?
Yes. You may notice NeXpose taking longer to start up the first time after installation. You may also notice it restarting more than once as it completes a required sequence of updates.
