Uninstalling Nexpose on Version 5.3 after Upgrading from an Older Version

If you attempt to uninstall Nexpose version 5.3 on Windows or Linux, you may see the following error message:


"An error occurred: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: com/rapid7/os/OSException : Unsupported major.minor version 51.0"


This error is related to an issue that only occurs when an older version of Nexpose has been upgraded to 5.3. Rest assured that this will not occur on a new installation with the Nexpose 5.3 installer.


Nexpose 5.3 includes a critical Java upgrade that allows for great enhancements to user experience and scanning.  When the Nexpose embedded Java environment is upgraded to Java 7, the uninstaller attempts to use the Java 6 binaries to run the uninstaller program. This is what causes the uninstaller failure because Nexpose has been upgraded and compiled with Java 7.
